Study and Living in Lithuania

Tuition Fees

The tuition fee varies depending upon the course, study level and institution. The tuition fee is declared annually by the educational institutions.

The Lithuanian or EU/EEA country students can expect to pay:
  • For bachelor degree programmes: 1.000 to 5.300 EUR per year
  • For master’s degree programme: 2.200 to 6.500 EUR per year 
  • For postgraduate studies- PhD: 7.100 to 8.500 EUR per year
Tuition fees for students coming from other countries, i.e. non-EU/EEA, are different.

The Ministry of Education and Science of Lithuania may pay tuition fees for Lithuanian language programmes or Lithuanian studies and offer scholarships to those international pupils, researcher and teachers, who come to Lithuania as per the international agreements.

Living Expenses

Lithuania is an affordable country. As a student in Lithuania, you get many discounts. There are student discounts available for getting around the country through public transport, for eating at restaurants, etc. 

The cost of living varies depending upon the lifestyle, facilities and location. On an average, a student can expect to pay between LTL 1000 and 2500. Public transportation is cheap in Lithuania. A monthly ticket for public transportation is about 15 EUR.

Accommodation costs:  Dormitories are inexpensive and the rent ranges from 55 to 60 EUR per month. For apartment, the rent varies depending upon the location- city centre or outside city centre and number of rooms- one or three. On an average, you can expect to pay between 500 LTL and 2,150 LTL per month. 

Student Discounts

Discounts are available for students in the Republic of Lithuania. In order to get the discount, students must hold a Lithuanian student identity card (LSIC) along with an International Student Identity Card (ISIC). The International student identity card is not compulsory, but allows you to get access to more discounts. 

The Lithuanian student identity card is issued by the Lithuanian student union (LSS) and this card is valid only in Lithuania. This card is compulsory for all the students in the Republic of Lithuania.

Students Coming to Lithuania

Students can reach Lithuania by following modes:  
By plane: In Lithuania, there are international airports in Palanga, Vilnius and Kaunas. 

By bus: This mode of transport takes time, but is comfortable. Students from European countries can come to Lithuania by bus also. Tickets for bus can be booked online or can be purchased at an international ticket office.

By train: The railway system in Lithuania is managed by the Lithuanian Railways (Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai). You can enter the country by rails. 

By ferry: There are sea ferries on 6 routes connecting the largest seaport of Lithuania, Klaipeda, to ports in Poland, Sweden, Germany and Denmark. Some of the ferries are:

Public Transportation

Public transport in Lithuania is easily available and comfortable. It is well-developed and cheap too. There are buses, minibuses and trolleybuses available. Student can travel in and around the country at half rates on public transport. They are given discounts.

Getting Around by Taxi

Taxis are available in Lithuania. You can book a taxi by calling the taxi provider. They are low-priced. 

Student Accommodation

Campus Accommodation- Hall of residence:  The higher education institutions in Lithuania offer campus accommodation to students. All the necessary facilities are provided- kitchen, bathroom, furniture, internet access, library, etc. These are located near the institution or in the city centre. 2-3 students can share a room. This accommodation option is cheaper. Students must make the booking in advance to the accommodation office of the institution.

Rent an apartment/flat: The cost varies depending upon the location, number of rooms and amenities. You can visit the following websites for rent housing:

Students can find private accommodation through real estate agencies also. 

Hotels: Students can stay in hotels if in the country for a short duration. You can book a room in the hotel online.

Health Insurance

Health Insurance for EU Citizens

Students coming from one of the 27 EU member states, or from Switzerland, Iceland, Norway or Liechtenstein, and having a European health insurance card (EHIC), are provided with state health care services in the case of an accident. 

Health Insurance for non-EU Citizens

Students of non-EU countries must contact the embassy of their country in Lithuania to know the health insurance. They must possess a private health insurance that can be acquired in Lithuania or in their home country. 

Pupils aged 18 or above are entitled to get the insurance and free medical treatment if they provide a document to the territorial health insurance fund, which states their status as a student.  

To get registered at a health centre, students must fill out a special application form and present an identity card that possesses your photo and a national identification number.

Working Conditions

Students are allowed to work for maximum 20 hours per week part-time. 

For EU Citizens

Students coming from EU/EEA countries or Switzerland do not require a work permit to work in Lithuania. 

For non-EU Citizens

The non-EU students require a work permit in order to work while studying in Lithuania. The work permit is valid for 2 days and is issued by the Lithuanian Labour Exchange within 2 months of the application received. The conditions as per which the work permit is issued is decided by the Ministry of Social Affairs ad Labour. 

Submit the following documents along with the application for the work permit:
  • Fees
  • A copy of your temporary residence permit
  • Document from the higher education institution indicating that you are a student of 2nd or later years
  • Employment contract copy or written agreement by the employer

Communications

Mobile phones: Mobile phones are used by all. The main mobile companies running in Lithuania are as follows:

  • MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators)
Internet: Students can get access to internet in cafes, libraries, hostels and other places.
